MCAS, Yuma, AZ. VMCJ-2 Mishap By: Rich Rentrop June 5,1966 MCAS, Yuma, AZ. Aircraft #153090 (Instructor Pilot) Capt. Doxsee (RSO) Unknown Cause: Crash due to stalls -Rich Rentrop-- Aircraft #153090 which crashed due to a stall in 1966. I believe this aircraft was operated by VMCJ-2 at the time and was at MCAS Yuma working up to their deployment to Vietnam. An instructor pilot, Captain Doxsee, liked to demonstrate a no-flaps take-off to new pilots (possibly to demonstrate a neglected checklist). On one take-off Captain Doxsee did not catch the nose in time and the aircraft rocketed into the air and promptly stalled (not unlike the vertical catapult launch picture). The right wing dropped and the RF-4B, gear up, slammed back down on the tarmac. The aircraft came to a stop, intact except for the seats, about 100 feet from the A-4 flightline. The subsequent fire was extinguished immediately. Unfortunately, Captain Doxsee ejected too low and too slow and died as a result of his injuries. VMCJ-2 had just started receiving RFs only a few months before this, so even the instructor pilots were learning how to tame it. It's a shame that it took the lives of several pilots during the process.
